A Deeper Look at Ketamine for Alcohol Use Disorder

Is ketamine legal? Where are magic mushrooms legal? These are questions we hear a lot lately. With clinical trials moving MDMA toward FDA approval, celebrities continuing to share their psychedelic experiences, and politicians supporting new research — many people are wondering if psychedelics are actually legal. And if so which ones?

Many of these inquiries revolve around ketamine, a compound gaining popularity in both recreational and therapeutic settings. So, is ketamine legal? We take a closer look.

Ketamine: A Legal Psychedelic Medicine

Ketamine, classified as a dissociative anesthetic, has long been used in medical settings for surgical procedures and pain management, with the FDA approving ketamine back in 1970 as an anesthetic. Fast forward to the current psychedelic renaissance and ketamine therapy is acting as a test case and trailblazer for the future psychedelic medicine roll-out. Being an already FDA-approved drug, ketamine is now prescribed around the world to treat a variety of conditions, from depression to anxiety to addiction.

Off-Label Use

While ketamine is legally approved for medical use, it is often prescribed off-label for mental health conditions. Off-label use refers to the prescription of a medication for a condition not specifically listed on its approved label. Physicians may exercise their discretion to prescribe ketamine to patients experiencing severe depression or other mental health challenges when traditional treatments have proven ineffective.

In terms of psychedelic therapy, the majority of prescriptions today are done off-label, allowing patients to access treatment while health agencies examine ketamine potential for other indications.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

In addition to off-label use, ketamine is also administered in the context of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. This approach involves combining the administration of ketamine with therapeutic support to facilitate emotional processing and psychological healing. This form of therapy is typically conducted in a controlled and supportive environment, ensuring the safety and well-being of the individual undergoing treatment. Many studies and clinical trials are testing ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for conditions like depression and addiction disorders.

If these studies are successful, then the FDA or other health agencies will approve ketamine for additional conditions — making it more widely available for patients.

Note: In 2019, the FDA approved a fast-acting nasal-spray ketamine compound as a treatment for depression (Spravato). Making it the first psychedelic approved specifically for a mental health condition.

Many clinics and doctors are now prescribing Spravato for depression patients, with sales increasing substantially in the past year.

Legal Ketamine Clinics

As the therapeutic potential of ketamine becomes more widely recognized, specialized ketamine clinics have emerged to provide a legal and regulated environment for its administration. These clinics offer a structured approach to ketamine-assisted therapy, ensuring appropriate dosing, monitoring, and therapeutic support. Benefits include:

  • Qualified Healthcare Professionals: Legal ketamine clinics are staffed by qualified healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health experts. These professionals possess the necessary knowledge and experience to assess patients, provide appropriate dosing, and deliver therapeutic support throughout the treatment process.
  • Personalized Treatment Plans: Each patient’s journey in a legal ketamine clinic begins with a thorough assessment of their mental health condition and treatment history. Based on this evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is developed, considering factors such as dosage, frequency of sessions, and integration of therapy.
  • Supervised Ketamine Sessions: Ketamine treatments in legal clinics are administered in a controlled environment under the supervision of healthcare professionals. This ensures patient safety and allows for immediate medical attention if needed. The dosage and administration method may vary, depending on the specific treatment protocol followed by the clinic.
  • Integration and Follow-up Support: Legal ketamine clinics prioritize the integration of the ketamine experience into patients’ overall therapeutic journey. They offer post-treatment support, including psychotherapy sessions, to help individuals process their ketamine experiences, integrate insights, and foster long-lasting positive changes.
  • Ethical and Regulatory Compliance: Legal ketamine clinics adhere to all relevant ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks. They operate within the boundaries of the law and prioritize patient safety, confidentiality, and the highest standards of care.

At-home ketamine

At-home ketamine treatments are increasing in popularity as an alternative for individuals seeking therapeutic relief in the comfort of their own homes. Often done virtually, and with the guidance of healthcare professionals, patients can administer ketamine in a self-administered or caregiver-assisted manner. At-home treatments often involve the use of nasal spray or sublingual formulations that are tailored to specific dosages and treatment protocols.

Companies like Mindbloom, NueLife, and Wondermed are some of the leading at-home ketamine companies.

So, the answer is yes, ketamine is legal under certain circumstances. These therapies are currently helping countless people overcome a range of conditions, however, it should always be done under the supervision of healthcare professionals and with appropriate safety measures in place to ensure patient well-being and minimize risks.
