Eureka, California has become the latest city to decriminalize psychedelic medicines. The city council adopted a resolution this week that moves psychedelics (Entheogenic Plants and Fungi) to the lowest priority level for law enforcement.
“… planting, cultivating, purchasing, transporting, distributing, engaging in practices with, or possessing Entheogenic Plants and Fungi or their extracted compounds that are on the Federal Schedule I list … will not be a public safety priority for the City of Eureka.”
This resolution comes soon after California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a decriminalization bill
that had passed the State Assembly and Senate. The veto was a blow to decrim activists, however, local municipalities are continuing their work, with Eureka becoming the fifth California jurisdiction to pass major decrim measures.
Gov Newsom vetoed SB 58, our bill to decriminalize mushrooms & other naturally occurring psychedelics.
So for now, folks who benefit from these non-addictive substances remain classified as criminals under CA law.
